Back Pain Acupuncture May Provide Relief to Some Patients

Back Pain Acupuncture May Provide Relief to Some Patients

Back pain acupuncture has been increasing in popularity over the last few years as alternative healing modalities have become more accepted. An ancient Chinese practice, there is little in the way of traditional western logic to show how or why acupuncture works to relieve back pain, but studies have suggested that it does work. Generally speaking, acupuncturists say that it relieves pain by redirecting “Qi,” or life energy, along invisible meridians in the body to remove energy blocks and improve overall flow. This process is directed by the insertion of tiny needles into the skin along the body’s meridians.

Before pursuing back pain acupuncture as a treatment, you will want to visit your doctor for an accurate diagnosis. Sciatica, osteoarthritis, and pinched nerves are just a few of the conditions that acupuncture can provide relief from, but you’ll want to make sure that you don’t have any extensive nerve damage that requires more traditional medical intervention. Your doctor may also be able to provide you with a list of reputable acupuncturists for you to consider. Once you select one, you should be prepared for a lengthy introductory interview during which the acupuncturist will ask you questions not only about your back pain, but also about your lifestyle, diet, stress level and more. Acupuncturists use all of this information to determine your treatment plan and where to place the needles. When the needles are inserted, you may feel a small pinch, or nothing at all. Bleeding, bruising and infection are possible but rare. It may take several sessions of acupuncture to ease your back pain.

If acupuncture doesn’t bring you lasting relief, and other conservative treatment methods like physical therapy and over-the counter medicines don’t work either, you may want to consider treatment at Laser Spine Institute (LSI). We perform minimally invasive back and neck procedures that are highly effective and generally safe. If you’d like to learn more about these treatments, contact LSI today. We can review your MRI or CT scan for free to determine if one of our procedures can provide you with more relief than back pain acupuncture.
